Note: This 'saga' had continued - and I had missed this report: Environment Canterbury loses crucial appeal over width of region's river beds:Stuff - Environmental:11-Oct-2019Canterbury farmers next to the region's braided rivers are the winners after a high-level ruling with implications for land use across the Canterbury Plains. The Court of Appeal has dismissed claims by Environment Canterbury (ECan) that the High Court had been wrong in its narrower definition of the width of the region's braided river beds than the District Court. In February ECan appealed the High Court ruling, with chief executive Bill Bayfield saying it was "in the public interest" to do so and the significance of protecting the special values of braided rivers was "too important an issue not to fight for".
