Everybody has some Landonline tricks that they have picked up from sources other than the help manual. The aim of this thread is to share these. My favourites are: - Bringing the underlying mark layer to the top in the spatial view: In the spatial view, if you drag the 'underlying marks' layer to the top of the tree on the left, the underlying marks will display above the captured marks, which is handy for ensuring that you haven't missed any out when linking.
- Renewed marks in Landonline - this is not explained very well in the RCS Guidelines. Great explanation here.
- Viewing and linking node IDs of two nodes close together: Covered here.
- Accessing client drives via My Documents: Often when you go to upload to or save information from Landonline you are presented with a panel that looks like this one:
Click on the drop down arrow highlighted above, and choose 'My Documents'. Double click on 'Local Client Drives'
and you will get access to all of the network drives available on your computer.
- 'Parcel not defined in a clockwise direction' - don't panic: This error appears when uploading XML datasets (usually ones with lots of irregular boundaries). It is easily resolved by entering the 'Parcel Capture' screen, unlinking the offending parcel and selecting 'Refresh' from the capture menu. Sometimes there will be lots of them to unlink - my current record is about 15. They seem to link perfectly OK once mark linking etc is complete.

I would also strongly advise Landonline users to check out the changes to Plan Generation featured in version 3.10, which was released in May 2014. A guide to the changes can be found here. LINZ clearly put a lot of effort into this, which is great to see . Now, about that 'fence' linestyle.... and a vincular tool!

Another great leap forward from LINZ is that if you find that a survey plan or title image from Landonline, or a plan from the Institute's Cadastral Index is illegible, or if you need to see the colour version, you can use the 'Request Manual Copy' option under 'Tools' in the Landonline search window to request a hi-resolution scan. Requests are usually turned around within a couple of days, and the good folk at LINZ are uploading the improved images back into Landonline as they are captured. Be aware of the following when doing this: 1. A lot of roll maps, record maps etc have been handed onto Archives NZ, so you can't get these via this route, although Archives will let you have a look at them free of charge if you can get to their office (or you can find someone who has the microfilm cards ). 2. If you use the Cadastral Index, always check to see if an improved image has already been uploaded, to avoid embarrassment.

All of the Landonline Hints and Tips from the old Landonline website appear to have been migrated over to the Knowledgebase on the new LINZ website, which has a pretty good search engine. I've just used it to update the links in the posts above and had no trouble finding what I wanted. Nice work LINZ!

LandonLine and Windows 10:
Planning to upgrade to Windows 10? You might find that it affects your Digital Certificate. Make sure you read the following information first.
Landonline users upgrading an existing PC to Windows 10 may find they are unable to sign following the upgrade. This is because Digital Certificates are sometimes corrupted by the upgrade process.
We strongly recommend that you make a backup of your digital certificate prior to upgrading.
Please refer to Steps 1 and 2 at transfer your digital certificate for instructions on how to transfer your Digital Certificate to a portable device and for re-importing after upgrading to Windows 10.
Note: The issue only relates to that part of the certificate required for signing. Non-signing users are not affected.

Has anyone tried importing a certificate into MS Edge yet? Interested to know how this will work!

Rectify Overwritten text on Diagram Labels.
This is a pesky problem that sometimes happens. (I am not convinced it is not of my doing - the overwritten diagram labels seem to appear automatically ) It may be that the text or diagram has been dragged too close to the outside border so the two text bits (eg: "Non-Primary" and "Diag. AA") overlap. You will also get requisitioned on it if it is not sorted.. )
But the solution is easy. - Just select the offending overlapping text and drag away from the border
- Then with the text selected, right-click and select "original location"
- Magic, the text resets and no longer overlaps
- Move text label back to the desired position.

With regard to duplicate marks created in the Greater Christchurch area due to the whole "unproven" fiasco: When linking non-boundary marks, LINZ would prefer us to link to the original instance of the mark. Our survey vectors should "drag" these into the correct position, and LINZ will tidy up and eliminate the duplicate during CMN.
For linking boundary marks, do whatever linking is required for correct topology, regardless of proven/unproven duplicates.

A notification extracted from the NZIS Forum that is useful information.
I did notice this on a recent plan where a side road name centroid/origin was affixed to a main road point. I thought I was getting (more) senile as a previous check some time earlier had clearly labelled the road correctly....
Landonline has recently outsourced the road names database used for Landonline and it's causing problems. The issue is, the road names that show on survey and title plans are spontaneously changing to different (ie, adjacent) road names. We've had this happen multiple times after we've already checked our plans, and once in the final complete as we lodged our plans. LINZ is unable to resolve this issue, but have now listed it as being a "known issue" on their website. The example that they have provided on their website is one specific example and is by far not the only situation in which the error occurs. The 'recommended' solution going forward is to hide all automatically generated road names, and label them all using User Added Text on all survey and title sheets.
(Thanks Theresa!)

Ah ha! I got caught by this just recently, fortunately it was spotted before submission. I had wondered about the cause.

A little gem from Georgina Beattie at the recent ICS Workshop. If in prevalidation you get a warning that the adjustment failed to converge, similar to this one (image care of Georgina): Look for the mark with the greatest change. In the case above, this one: The problem in your network is likely to be at or in the immediate vicinity of this point.

Plan Generation Anomalies: (Nov/Dec 2018) If you notice that some bearings and/or distances are not being brought through onto diagrams within plan generation, then it is not your fault. There is (at this time) an unresolved intermittent and random plan generation issue.
Work-arounds include: 1. Contact Customer Support and get them to raise a review with an Analyst. (This will mean you cannot work on the dataset or progress it, so if you need to complete/lodge the dataset then try the next options..) This does not guarantee a fix - else they would have sorted it by now...
2. Generate a new diagram of the patch that does not display the bearings and/or distances. Add that to the plan area and "borrow" the missing bearings/distances and then hide all remainder text/linework etc. The only thing you cannot hide are the diagram labels. Either black these out by overwriting them, or use them in a note explaining that the are no diagrams "X" on this plan.
3. Add the missing information by "user added text". Note that LINZ don't like you using the ° symbol or ' or " as user-added text for bearings. So either leave gaps or try decimalising the bearings.
4. Potentially you could delete your carefully choreographed diagram (if it has already been tidied up) and regenerate a completely new one to replace it. However, this may take some time and rework and so the above options 2 and 3 are the fastest and most efficient solutions.
For all of the above, include a note within the report that plan-generation was not loading vector labels and what you have done. If you are requisitioned to fix it, then request a refund after you do so - it is not your fault that LandonLine functionality was glitching....

Thanks Brent we were requisitioned a few weeks ago on an issue that related to this....we couldn't explain it and had we known what you have just posted, we could have possibly had some productive dialogue with the examiner to get a good level of understanding from both sides.

Thanks Mark. Frustrating it is.
And what/who should I charge my time to? - Time spent trying to resolve why I wasn't seeing the bearings/distances thinking it was something I was doing wrong; - Time spent checking with colleagues in-house to see if they could work it out; - Time spent on the phone to Customer Support (45 mins) whilst they tried doing all the things that I had already tried; - Time spent enacting the easiest work-around.
