This very current and topical news story about a land issue cannot be left unmentioned in this ICS newsfeed. Not since Bastion Point ( NZ History) has there been such a controversial land issue that encompasses local Iwi; the Crown and the wider public of NZ in such an impassioned way. This report - Stuff:: National news - 30-July-2019 - via RNZ's "Newsroom" provides a good summary of the "Why?".

And a Deal has been Done to resolve this Issue: NZ Herald - 17-Dec-2020Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson says the Government is spending $30 million to resolve the dispute at Ihumātao because the issue risked becoming his "generation's Bastion Point". The Government is buying the land at Ihumātao from Fletchers for $30 million. Some of it will be used for housing – and the deal could eventually pass it into the ownership of tangata whenua. Protest organisers say today's deal is an "important first step", but that it should now be up to whānau to decide the best use for the land. Now, what will be the next step for the Naysayers; Alternate Truth Supporters; and Conspiracy Analysts who will continue to pick over this contentious issue in case there is some media attention left in it? Or will it simply reach a win-win outcome where the Kingitanga/Iwi/Crown come up with a development solution that provides much needed public housing; has some private housing and community infrastructure; and sufficient open space to provide a vibrant new local community?
