The latest issue of the ICS Express has amongst its excellent articles a picture of survey students from Helsinki in the 19th century.
The editor was of the opinion that the uniforms including hats should be adopted (made mandatory?) for present day surveyors.
This suggestion has its merit but what I am particularly concerned with is the inferior hats that are available to field workers.
You think that in this day and age, a decent space age hat would be available.
In Northland we need a hat with two features:-
• the ability to provide protection from the sun in the summer which is searingly hot and burns without remorse and
• protection from the rain which comes in torrents for the other three months.
• also it needs to stay on the head.
• also it needs to be impervious to sweat.
• ok that’s four simple features.
Four simple requirements for a good hat. It doesn’t get cold in Northland in the winter, so I don’t want a one season hat. I want a multi-season hat.
The hat I am current using is made by Cactus Clothing. It provides protection from the sun. It is suitable for very light showers. It does not stay on the head. The slightest breeze removes it and it invariably lands just over the fence. Even if there was no fence there seconds before.
It does not prevent sweat running down the forehead to the tip of the nose from where it drips steadily on to the field book or controller.
I tried fitting a removable washable headband with Velcro, but it didn’t work.
The hat looks natty but fails on 2 out of four requirements.
Very disappointing.
If anyone has a suggestion for a superior hat please post it here.
I will be glad to hear of any suggestions.
