Is this a slippery slope? Stuff - 27-July-2017
The Hurunui Water Project - a private company - has requested powers to compulsory acquire land through the Minister of Land Information.
Now that may seem to be a reasonable way of completing the jig-saw puzzle of land banking in order to build a long corridor for a large water scheme, but is it fair? Or is it a case on rural NIMBY'ism? Or will a suitable payment make it all acceptable?
Is there a precedent for this in NZ?

Hardly unprecedented - Central Plains Water gained the same power in ~2006. As to whether the livelihood of a small number of farmers is a matter of the public good, YMMV.

I wasn't aware of the CPW precedent. Thanks for pointing that out.
(But what is YMMV? - Google says "your mileage may vary" )

Exactly so. Whether you find this a positive or a negative outcome.
