Has anyone attempted requesting Trig Cards from Archives NZ who could advise the best way to go about this? Or a better question ... if I have gone to LINZ to request Trig Card information to complete a survey, and LINZ has outsourced that information to Archives NZ, is it not LINZ obligation to go and get that information for me?

Obligation or not, good luck getting LINZ to supply data that has been passed to Archives. Been there, done that, "Unfortunately we no longer hold that information". In Canterbury this includes Black and Red Maps and other Record Maps that are sometimes the only documentary evidence of title dimensions. Archives have been pretty good to deal with, but as until recently they were only a block away I generally fronted up in person. I haven't tried requesting items at a distance - I assume it is possible...?

Diminishing access to all records for surveyors (and the public) is a real concern. It will lead ultimately to poor decision making by the surveyor and LINZ, and more litigation. It is something as an organisation I am keen to see us question LINZ on - imaging records is only part of the solution. You still have to be able to identify, find and get your hands on them.

LINZ answer to the above question was short - Archives NZ now own the records and we must contact Archives to get them. Archives advise turnaround of 15 working days. Whereas LINZ are pretty good at responding to requests for old records promptly, I guess other agencies are not under the same obligation?
