Many New Zealanders and overseas tourists (when they used to freely come and go....) have enjoyed the many "rail trail" cycle routes throughout the country. The Central Otago ones are particularly stunning in terms of scenery and their historical links. But the (current) thorn in the side of the Roxburgh Gorge Trail is need to take a jet-boat ride over a middle portion where access has not been secured. (OK for the jet boat operator though...) Read about the reason why: A 13-kilometre gap in the centre of one of Otago’s top cycle trails will likely remain after a Department of Conservation (DOC) “stuff up”. Cyclists on the 34km Roxburgh Gorge trail have had to take a $100 jet boat ride along the length of the gap, where farmers have denied access, since the trail opened in 2013. A pastoral lease review last year could have allowed the stretch to be transferred into public ownership and enabled the trail to be built, but DOC was two days late in submitting its request. Stuff - Travel: 19-Dec-2020- Perhaps there is light at the end of the trail with potential access being provided if the price is right.
