Offers of help but still no solution to New Plymouth retiree's sinking homeStuff - Taranaki Daily News: 13-July-2023Still no positive change to this issue....Barbara Hardwidge wishes she had won the “big” Lotto last week. Not so she could go on a cruise or travel the world. Hardwidge wants to take the New Plymouth District Council (NPDC) to court to get them to take responsibility for her sinking house. As it stands she can’t afford to do that. She can’t afford to do much at all with her life savings tied up in her New Plymouth home that is essentially worthless. What she didn’t know in 2006 when she bought her house, was that it had been built on an old sawdust pit, that had been overlaid with fill made of mixed ash and topsoil. And underneath all that was a swamp.
