Most are oblivious to the loose rocks, 200 metres above them, that are held together by screws. Workers wearing hi-visibility clothes, helmets and harnesses are roped to the cliff as they work carefully to ensure it is secure. Helicopters sometimes assist with visual inspections. But in the 1970s it was a different story for Ministry of Works employee Steve Dick, who instead took ginger steps across the towering Nevis Bluff, knowing that one misplaced foot could propel him to his death.
