I wonder how many people actually rely on the "world-famous-in-NZ" AA road sign at Bluff when they depart to head to Welly - and Cape Reinga for that matter.... Stuff - 22 Sep 2017
I guess if one was flying their helicopter and lined up over the pole and extrapolated the direction from the 800mm arm of the sign they may not quite reach their destination.... As for the distance differences, it may be nice to be correct, but the less than 1% difference must be within the bounds of the AA road distance accuracy tolerance specification residual error ratio calculation least squares budget. Surely.....
Nevertheless, it is good to see the Council went to Dr Denys from OU to clarify and resolve the matter....

[another report on a similar issue...]Ghost miles: How did 49km go missing between Bluff and Cape Rēinga?Stuff - National: 9-Oct-2022Somewhere, somehow, 49 kilometres have gone missing in Aotearoa. Government agencies don’t know where they are. Neither do a range of local boards, experts and transport policy wonks. But what we do know is this: at opposite ends of the motu, in Bluff and Cape Rēinga, two iconic road signs give very different numbers for how far it is from one end of the country to the other.
