I have recently had a response back from Chorus following an enquiry as to the capacity of their telecommunication network to add a single new connection. The location is in a rural location (Banks Peninsula). Their reply indicated that "While we do have existing copper network nearby, it does not have the capability to support reliable connectivity speeds for new connections to our network and hence we will not be offering a copper quote for this development"Therefore a fibre connection was their only solution, and an estimate to extend the fibre network to the site was provided. The cost being $2,140,000.00 incl GST. !!!! (OK, there is some 10.5km of fibre cabling required, but for that sort of cost you could buy a lot of pidgeons....) Needless to say, we will be researching a rural wireless broadband connection solution. Please feel free to add to this thread and post your own experiences of "estimates gone awry"
