Controversy over dumping of plan change in 'secrecyStuff - Nelson Mail: 30-Aug-2023A controversial plan change that would have enabled the division of 33 hectares of land in Wakefield into medium density and smaller than usual allotments for housing has been put on the chopping block by council staff. The move has blindsided Wakefield residents who had supported the change, who say the proposed withdrawal was made in “secrecy” and that they only were notified about it two days in advance. Speaking at the public forum of the Tasman District Council strategy and policy committee, Sonja Lamers, on behalf of Homes for Wakefield, a subcommittee of the Wakefield Community Council, said a recent survey made it clear that the community needed smaller houses. Principal planner environmental policy Anna McKenzie set out the reasons behind the proposed withdrawal to councillors. Among them was that Plan Change 76 – Wakefield would create a risk to council having to divert funds and resources needed to meet the National Policy Statement on Urban Development.
