Court Orders Pool Contractor to Keep Building Amidst ‘Astronomical Blow-out’The Press - Chch: 28-Oct-2023Only a last ditch court order has stopped the contractor building Christchurch’s metro sports facility Parakiore from suspending and abandoning the project. The major anchor project to construct an Olympic-sized pool, diving facilities and hydroslides near Hagley Park is more than 70% complete. While the city council’s contribution to the Parakiore project is capped at $146.9 million, the Crown has faced constant budget escalations. The original project, announced in 2013, was to cost $217m. Since then, a new contract and further cost pressures took the total bill to $365m. Then last year construction firm CPB Contractors sought an extra $212m before upping its demands to $439m - which if agreed, would take the total bill for completing Parakiore to $696m - more than the $683m to build the city’s stadium, Te Kaha. [How can a "blow-out" of this magnitude happen? Is it poor Contract Management? - Politics? - astute Legal representation from the Contractor? - Something else that is not being reported?]
