Houses to be built on protected side of Te Mata PeakStuff - Hawkes Bay: 22-Jan-2024Earthworks have begun on the eastern face of Te Mata Peak to accommodate houses that were signed off before a building prohibition came into place. The earthworks are on a slope about 150m west of Waimarama Road, opposite the Craggy Range Winery. Hastings District Council signed off a Certificate of Compliance for the development of two dwellings and a supplementary dwelling on the property in September 2022. A Certificate of Compliance is formal record that a proposed development at a point in time is a permitted activity under the District Plan. A council has no discretion or ability to refuse it. A Plan Change that prohibited new buildings on the face came into force in October 2022, a month after the certificate was issued.
