Developer fined $96k for chopping protected pine damaged by tornadoStuff - Auckland: 24-April-2024A disagreement over whether a Norfolk Pine tree could have survived damage caused by a tornado has landed a developer with tens of thousands of dollars in fines in the Auckland District Court. Zulfikar Ali of Z Ali Investments Limited had plans to develop a property on St George Street in Papatoetoe into either 15 or 16 lots, depending on if the tree was retained. The court heard that Ali’s consultants had previously contacted Auckland Council informing it they would request permission to fell the tree. The tree was protected, being a notable tree in the New Zealand Tree Register.
