Historic Chinese Market Garden Settlement to be RestoredStuff - The Press: 9-Nov-2020The site of the largest Chinese community in the South Island a century ago will be restored after receiving funding and a historic places listing. The Ng King Brothers Chinese Market Garden in Ashburton operated from the early 1920s until 1964. However, it was more than a business, becoming a settlement where Chinese were offered employment, company and education. By the late 1940s, it had about 12 houses and at least 80 residents.
