Woman in limbo with no home after neighbouring house built across her boundary. Stuff - National: 21-April-2021This type of story is not unheard of - but is a typical mess that could and should be easily sorted. My concern with this report though, is the reference to the unreliability of survey pegs (!) by the Builder: "Dean McGuigan, owner of Golden Homes in Christchurch, said it was the first time they had encountered the problem. Builders knew to check exact locations and not rely on fences or survey pegs, he said."

Stuff - The Press: 23-April-2021A progress report - at least some movement toward a resolution that will enable building to commence (but not a resolution as to compensation). And also - a Surveyor's comment... And with no mention of a building location certification sign-off: - no surveyor would be liable; - Council can probably still be safe from any flak; - so that puts the builder in the scope of responsibility....

And another news item with a similar theme: Auckland man facing $315,000 bill after house built in wrong place: Stuff - national: 17-May-2021A developer is suing an Auckland home owner after a building consent error saw his property built right on the neighbour’s boundary. The one metre difference between where Deepak Lal’s house was built and where it should have been located could cost him hundreds of thousands to fix.
