Marooned between two vast man-made lakes, staring at a 5-metre wall of shrubs, exposing noise-sensitive sons to a construction site – residents are struggling to imagine living next to KiwiRail’s proposed freight centre in Palmerston North. Residents living beside the planned 177-hectare rail yards, between the airport and the rural village of Bunnythorpe, sometimes wept while talking to a commissioners’ panel considering KiwiRail’s notice of requirement to designate the site. And the part that smarts is that technically, they are “not impacted” by the development, and not entitled to compensation. Stuff - National: 20-August-2021
