While European navigators hugged coastlines during the Middle Ages, Māori purposefully sailed across the vast Pacific Ocean to discover Aotearoa, a Canterbury historian and new author says. University of Canterbury lecturer and researcher Madi Williams says major historical inaccuracies scribed by European scholars “unable to fathom the ability of Polynesian voyagers” dismissed their achievement and skill as “accidental drift voyages”.
