Major Earthquake Could Isolate Coast Communities for Two WeeksWest Coast communities should be prepared to fend for themselves for a fortnight when the Alpine Fault ruptures, according to a leading geologist. Stuff - National: 6-Sept-2021Otago University associate professor Caroline Orchiston has told the West Coast Regional Council audit and risk committee there is a 75 per cent chance of a magnitude 8 earthquake on the central section of the fault in the next 50 years. Orchiston is the science lead for AF8 – a combined research and Civil Defence programme that aims to increase resilience ahead of the predicted massive quake. The risk of the 'big one' happening within 50 years had previously been assessed as 29 per cent, she said
