How an unstable British pretext lost sight of the Treaty of WaitangiStuff - Opinion: 6-Feb-2022We like to think New Zealand is a young country. It is not. The first humans landed some eight centuries ago. With only the tools and technology they brought with them, Māori forged a distinctive culture and civilisation. Europeans came along and the British asserted ownership, before eventually fading away. This nation is an outpost of an Empire that dissolved and left us stranded. We inherited from them the ancient institutions, values and systems of governance that have their origins in the ruins of Athens. There is much to admire about this inheritance. It has served us well and even if we sometimes lose our way there is an inherent self-correcting and moderating force in them.
