Small Otago town could face 'severe' liquefaction and flooding if moderate earthquake strikesStuff - National: 10-June-2022If an earthquake hits the small Otago town of Glenorchy, it could face liquefaction worse than Christchurch experienced following the 2011 quakes. The town’s susceptibility to flooding could worsen the impacts, causing major damage and vertical subsidence, two new reports show. The risk is real with a 75% chance the Alpine Fault could rupture in the next 50 years, devastating parts of the South Island and cutting off lakeside towns surrounded by mountains such as Queenstown and Glenorchy. The effect of such an earthquake would be like “Christchurch 2011 on steroids” and would be long-lasting for the region’s tourism eocnomy, some officials say.
