What is a surveyor? What exactly do you do? These are common questions at barbeques and bars for every surveyor. Explaining the role of a surveyor continues to be one of the biggest challenges the profession faces.... This Industry Article from the Australian Consulting Surveyors magazine "The Surveyor" is an interesting read - and is relevant and topical in NZ. Would surveyors in NZ be stopped from working on building sites and infrastructure projects because unions felt the set-out was the domain of the construction sector (union) workers? - perhaps not - as the construction industry in NZ is not as heavily unionised compared to Aussie. If this happened, would the industry association step in and take the lead to find a solution? - most likely - as was the case when engineering certification by registered surveyors was questioned by some TLA . Would builders in NZ be wanting to take the lead in set-out ('marking') instead of the surveyor? - I would guess not - especially if the liability for getting it correct taken into account.
The other interesting factoid is the mention of 1500 surveyors needing to be added to the Australian profession each year for the next 10 years (!) to cope with the growth in their economy. - How many NZ trained surveyors will be tempted to cross the ditch when the inducements get juicer???!!
