Council pulls out of land sale to Kāinga Ora as residents' court action loomsStuff - Napier: 15-Sept-2023Residents of a Napier suburb have won their battle with the local council, which has pulled out of selling land to Kāinga Ora in the face of court action over a lack of public consultation. Napier City Council in 2021 agreed in principle to the sale of a 12 hectare block of land on Prebensen Drive, near the suburb of Tamatea, to Kāinga Ora for the purpose of developing it into a mixed residential development including some 240 houses, about a third of which were to be social housing.

The campaign to stop social housing in a wealthy South Auckland enclaveStuff - Auckland: 1-Oct-2023A 17-dwelling development in a wealthy enclave in South Auckland has infuriated local residents, having been revealed to be a social housing complex. Manurewa’s The Gardens is described by residents as “a lifestyle choice” away from the “slums and undesirables” of surrounding areas. A petition demanding that housing agency Kāinga Ora (KO) sell a new development on Hill Road has gained around 1900 signatures. “What is at stake is the future of The Gardens as you know it. There are many statistics that outline the issues that a development like this represents, like increases in crime and a drop in property value,” the petition said.

NZ State Housing - Going Strong since 1937Stuff - Lifestyle: 9-Oct-2023An interesting summary of the historical development of State Housing in NZ... Worth noting is the quote from Michael Joseph Savage, stating his aim when Labour came into power in 1935: “We want to build real homes for the people…. In a country like New Zealand there is no need for people to be herded together in tenements. There is plenty of land available, and the Government will build houses of which the occupants will be proud. “We do not want houses of a jerrybuilt kind from which people can look down the street without opening the door. Nor do we want standardised houses at which people can point and say, ‘That’s a Government house.’ There will be something distinctive about the houses, and there will be ample space for the children. “Above everything else, we want to ensure that the children are given a chance to live in decent surroundings, where they will be able to develop as nature meant them to.”- What happened to the 'standardised houses' ideal - the 1950's State House versions were deliberately "Government house" style!
- Will the Kainga Ora houses and developments of the recent 2000's still be considered as complying with Savage's and the Labour Party's aims?
- With the brakes being put on development of highly productive land - and with climate change mitigation reducing transportation networks - it is past time not to herd people together into tenements - albeit ensuring such developments have adequate recreational space access etc?
- And do any or all private - low cost - housing developments have similar aspirations space; not jerry built; distinctive; decent? Or are they purely dollar driven when it comes down to it?
