The Government is proposing to make it easier to build small, self-contained and detached houses, commonly known as ‘granny flats’ on property with an existing home on it.

We are seeking feedback on options to enable granny flats up to 60 square metres in size to be built without needing a building or resource consent. They will need to meet certain building performance and environmental criteria. We want these to be safe, healthy and durable homes.

More to the granny flat proposal than meets the eye

There could be more to the Government’s proposed granny flat law change than building your nan a flat, with possible implications for council planning departments.

The proposal, which stems from a National-NZ First coalition agreement, is intended to streamline the delivery of affordable homes, removing the need for consenting homes under 60 square metres.

A discussion document released on the proposal by Resource Management Reform Minister Chris Bishop and Minister for Building Chris Penk on Monday laid out a suite of changes to the Building Act and the Resource Management Act.
