Barbara Kendall pays out neighbours over ‘spite strip’ on subdivision

Kendall and her family are developing their Whangaparaoa property along the Weiti River into three lots, and need access to Riverhaven Drive.
Back in the 1990s, her neighbours got together to build the road so they could drive to their waterfront properties, which could previously only be accessed by the river.
The Kendalls already had vehicle access and declined to contribute. They also opposed their neighbours, arguing that the road would harm the ecological values of the area.
Things got increasingly complicated when the cost of building the road ballooned and residents had to borrow money from the council to finish it off.

“It’s not that interesting really, it’s just a bit of history,” Barbara Kendall told the Sunday Star-Times. “I don’t really think it’s that newsworthy, it’s just something that happened.”
